In England Celebrants are not allowed to perform marriages. However, couples can have a celebrant-led ceremony and register their marriage with a registrar either before, on or after the wedding day.

The Government ran a public consultation on wedding law reform in summer 2026, which included whether independent celebrants should be able to conduct legally binding ceremonies. Nothing has changed yet — if and when it does, I’ll update this page.

Registrar ceremonies follow a set format. They can be expensive, especially at weekends, and timings are strict because there are many ceremonies in one day, with little room for personalisation. Celebrants generally conduct just one, possibly two, ceremonies in a day, giving couples much more flexibility. Celebrants also meet their couples before the ceremony, whereas a registrar usually arrives on the day knowing little about the couple.

No. A celebrant gives couples the chance to say their own vows wherever they choose, whether that’s their garden, a woodland or any outdoor space — even castles or beaches! The options are limitless (with the right permissions, of course). Holding your ceremony somewhere without a wedding licence can also cut the overall cost of a wedding, because licensed venues often charge more to host a registered wedding. With a celebrant, you have complete freedom to choose a location that isn’t necessarily a traditional wedding venue.

In a nutshell, the role of a celebrant is multifaceted and deeply impactful. They bring expertise, creativity, and a whole lot of heart to the ceremonies they officiate, ensuring each event is personalised and memorable. Whether it’s a wedding, funeral, or any other significant life event, celebrants turn moments into cherished memories that last a lifetime. A celebrant acts like a master of ceremonies, and unlike traditional officiants, modern celebrants creatively tailor non-religious, spiritual and interfaith ceremonies to the people at their heart.

My 2026/2027 fees start from £650 for weddings, £500 for vow renewals, and £300 for naming ceremonies and celebrations of life. Travel up to 70 miles from my base in Leicestershire is included. Anything extra is agreed with you before you book. See services & fees.

Yes. As an independent celebrant I’m not tied to any one belief, so your ceremony can be completely non-religious, or it can include a hymn, prayer, reading or tradition that matters to you or your family. It’s your ceremony.

As early as you can, especially for weddings on popular weekends — I only take one wedding a day. Where possible we’ll meet for a discovery session at least six months before the day. For funerals and memorials, please get in touch as soon as you can and I’ll let you know my availability.
